The Legend of FuBong and DuYu (Origins of the Ceremonial Tribal Pipe)

Posted by baliduadara on November 1, 2010

In the days before recorded time, when the mountains were still young, there lived a mighty emperor named FuBong (“Brother of the Naga”).  He searched for many years to find his one true love.

In the prehistoric lands of ancient Southeast Asia

One day, while riding alone through the remotest region of his vast empire he spied a beautiful maiden collecting herbs and mushrooms in the jungle.  But when she spotted the lone rider, she ran deeper into the jungle undergrowth and disappeared.  For two days he searched for the maiden, asking all he came upon about her, to no avail.  On the eve of the third day of his search, he met a wandering mystic, told him of the maiden, imploring the mystic to help him find her.  The mystic complied, eager to please the powerful man, telling him that the girl, DuYu (the “Companion of Owls”), could be found in the village of Fudu at the full moon ceremony in three days time.

So the emperor rode to Fudu and, rather impatiently, awaited the ceremony.  He was told that this particular full moon was known as the Betrothal Moon and a special ceremony was held each year.  Each young maiden of a certain age will seek out and offer herself to the man of her choice.  By smoking from her proffered ceremonial pipe containing her blend of herbs, he accepts her and agrees to the coupling.

That evening, many a beautiful young woman implored and cajoled him, hoping this ruggedly-handsome and powerful stranger would smoke from her pipe.  But the emperor denied each pipe in turn.  Then, just as it seemed that the girls were finished, the intriguingly beautiful DuYu shyly approached him.  His heart soared as he accepted her pipe and smoked from it.  A wondrous euphoria overwhelmed him and he knew he had, at long last, found his one true love.  And DuYu, looking into the man’s soul, knew that he was indeed the mate she had hoped for.  Together, they returned to the Naga Palace, there to raise their nine children and share many blissful years together.

The FuDu Tribal Pipe is the best known replication of the pipe DuYu ceremoniously offered to FuBong at that ancient full moon ritual.  Now, as then, each FuDu Tribal Pipe is individually hand-crafted and embellished, making each pipe a unique work of art.
